Pala (Nutmeg)

Nutmeg is oval, yellow, fleshy, and has a distinctive aroma due to the essential oils contained in its flesh. When ripe, the skin and flesh of the nutmeg fruit open, revealing the seed enclosed in a red mace. Each fruit produces a single seed, which is white when young and darkens when ripe. The term nutmeg is also used for nutmeg seeds in trade. In Indonesia, Maluku and Papua are the largest nutmeg production centers, followed by Aceh and North Sulawesi. Nutmeg is also a leading export commodity.
